In steerage, the male immigrants were separated from the female immigrants in their sleeping berths. Each person was allowed a six foot long berth (bed) that was only two feet across. The beds were actually in the form of bunk beds. The beds lined the outside walls of the steerage section. Sometimes there were lots of bunk beds in the middle of the section too; it depended upon how many people were on the ship.
